Worms in Dirt

I was recently called to teach the CTR 7 class in Primary.  They are an amazing group of kids and I am having so much fun with them!!  I am a big fan of treats, so I asked the kids what sort of treat they would like.  I got several requests for brownies and chocolate chip cookies, but Ben is more creative...  My first week as their teacher he asked if I could make Skittles cookies.  I told him I'd see what I could do and then came home and looked it up on Google.  Thank heavens for Google!  He was duly impressed, but I think he took it as a challenge!  His next request had me thinking all week!  How the heck was I going to make Gummy Worm cookies??  They'd melt in the oven!  Of course, I missed the obvious - don't bake them!
Here they are - Worms in Dirt Cookies!  Cute, huh?
They're still pretty awesome up close!

You probably have a great recipe for chocolate oat no-bake cookies, but just in case, here is the one that we're been using in my family for 3 generations.  Mitch loves them.  We call them Mud Splats.

1/2 cup butter
2 cups sugar
1/4 cup cocoa
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup peanut butter
1 tsp. vanilla
3 cups oats

In a large saucepan on med-high, melt the butter, then add the sugar, cocoa and milk.  Stir.  Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally.  Boil for 1 minute (add 20-30 seconds if it is humid).  Take off the heat, and add the PB, mixing it in thoroughly and allowing it to melt into the syrup.  Quickly add the vanilla and oats and combine.  Spoon onto foil and allow to cool completely.

For Worms in Dirt, form the warm cookie mixture around two gummy worms.  I laid one worm down and piled a scoop on top of it, then tucked a second worm into the top of the cookie.  Work fast!  You don't want the cookie mixture to solidify in your pan.

Enjoy!

I love that he's all into it! Every class needs a student that entertains the adult. Worms in dirt, indeed!
